Curtiss built the 'America',
the first two engine flying boat in 1914. A flight to honor the 100 years
of peace between the U.S. and England following the war of 1812, the 'America'
was to fly the Atlantic, crewed by an American and an Englishman. U.S.
Navy destroyers were to be stationed every 100 miles along the route for
safety. World War I started, and the flight was canceled. Britain bought
the airplane and 20 more. These were modified or manufactured in England
and used extensively for anti-submarine patrol.
