A news story on this site in a suburban newspaper prompted a phone call from a reader. John Kemp had been an avid collector of Rochester postcards, and wanted to know if I would be interested in scanning them for this site. He had seen their potential, but had not known how to present them. Placing them online would be the ideal solution. I am now in the process on scanning them, and will be adding more of them soon. I am very enthusiastic about this new addition, but the size of his collection makes this a time consuming task.

Real Photo postcards were first printed  around 1900, and they are still used today. These postcards are actually photographs, processed in a darkroom, then printed with a  postcard style back. They usually were printed in very limited quantities, resulting in their desireability to collectors.  Topics can range from a proud homeowner sitting on his porch, to local events like circus parades, or disasters. These cards can be very hard to date unless postally imprinted. Because they are photographs, magnification will show minute details.

I will be adding Mr. Kemp's real photo postcards as a new section in the site. This gallery will have thumbnails, and the option of viewing a 300% enlargement of each card. These blow-ups will make it easier to look at details in these amazing images.

My thanks to John Kemp, for his trust, and the opportunity to help share his collection.
