A Famous Port

This view shows the site of old Carthage
Landing, on the east-side flats of the Genesee River, at Rochester, New
York, about one mile north of the Lower Falls. For years it was one of
the greatest shipping ports for commerce on the Great Lakes. Above, on
the high banks, was the village of Carthage. The flats were reached by
an inclined railway, and by a winding road.
