Pitkin House, Rochester, NY
.
The Pitkin House, at 474 East Avenue, was
built for William Pitkin, about 1840. Mr. Pitkin served as Mayor of Rochester,
1845-1846. This picture was reproduced from a rare, silver-plate daguerreotype
presented to The Rochester Historical Society by Henrietta Corson Harris,
of Springfield Massachusetts, a grand-niece of Azaria Boody who had purchased
the Pitkin house and farm in 1853, and gave eight acres of it to the University
of Rochester.
In 1855 the house was purchased by John Craig,
and in 1856 became the home of Daniel W. Powers who added a mansard roof
to the building during his ownership, and the iron lions that still guard
the entrance.
The house was remodeled, in 1906, by the
present owner, Gilman H. Perkins, according to plans furnished by J. Foster
Warner, architect.
