Suspension Bridge Over the Gorge of the Genesee River

Authorized by the Common Council, August 21, 1855; opened to public
use, July 30,1856; cost $16,000; location, a few feet north of the site
of the first Carthage Bridge of 1819, which was about 250 yards north of
the lower falls. Length, 755 feet; height of towers, 107 feet; height of
span above water, 208 feet. This suspension bridge fell, April 21, 1857,
from heavy weight of snow. The construction engineer of the bridge was
Josiah Bissell, Jr., and by his friends, it was called "The Bridge of Sighs."
