~ ROCHESTER'S HISTORY ~
AN ILLUSTRATED TIMELINE
.
Land cleared in 1829 to improve visability
of the lighthouse.
.
The entrance to the genesee River had always been clogged with reeds
and obstructed by sand bars, causing navigational hazzards. The lighthouse
was set quite far back from the lake, the site chosen for it's height.
The bluff originally overlooked a marsh, which has since been filled in.
In 1829 the Congress approved $10,000 for improvements of navigation to
the river, and a part of these funds was used to clear a wedge of forest
in front of the light, from round Pond to Rock Beach, a distance of nearly
two and a half miles.
