      Creation of the Eastern Widewaters

        Red line shows the location of the new embankment and tow path for the north wall of the Enlarged Erie Canal built in 1835
         
         


        In 1836 the northern wall of the old canal prisim was removed and the water allowed to fill between the two remaining walls, creating the Widewaters. The peninsula jutting into the west end of the lake was created for the Culver Road Bridge.

        Note: The grayscale maps show Rochester today. Cobb's Hill Reservoir, the Armory and many of the streets and buildings shown, did not appear untill after the turn of the century. Also the canal locks associated with this area have been omitted for clarity.
