- THE ERIE CANAL IS CONVERTED INTO ROCHESTER'S SUBWAY
- Plans developed to re-route canal around Rochester. The southern route would pass through Genesee Valley Park, and the northern route which would pass over the river on an aqueduct 200 feet high and a thousand feet long. The southern route was selected in 1905.
- City buys abandoned canal lands from state for $1.5 million.
- Plans submitted to rebuild canal bed as subway.
- The abandoned Erie Canal and its Aqueduct are rebuilt in a $12,000,000 project. The canal bed is to be used for a subway system. Where the canal prism passes through the city it is crossed by steel beams. Seventeen inches of concrete are poured over the steel, and form the road bed for the new 'broad' street. The Aqueduct had subway rails laid on the old canal bed. A additional level is added above the new subway for automobile traffic to cross the river on the 'new' Broad Street Bridge.
- Broad Street formally opens.
